A friend of mine found for me this amazing antique rusty padlock when she heard I was making this.
Was origionally going to be crafted out of Redwood boards but they turned out to be still to moist to use. So Mr. G recomended this Birch Ply to simplify the task, stains really well and can imitate other woods just as easily. Paired with the same technique I used on the TRA cabinet, should have no problem getting the plank-built look of genuine redwood.
The hard part is finding hardware.
**UPDATE: October 13, 2008 Now that I'm back from the middle of the Califronia wilderness, I have all the propper tools again. I've found my Hinges and am still searching for matching handels and a hasp and draw bolts. It's really comming together... Cant wait till its finished.
I have hit a snag. I realize now that I need a center brace to support the lid no thanks to the wood being various degrees of warped. Worse yet it would displace my swivel shelf I really wanted and I dont want to settle for a lid insert; more efficent though it may be, just doesn't have the same appeal.
**UPDATE: December 10, 2008 I ordered three aditional hinges, picked up some bar and generic brass draw bolts at Ace, and took it all into metal shop and mill/cut/filed/painted them up into a fancy new set of matched hinges, drawbolts, and a hasp! Woot.
Lid brace came out nicely, makes a pretty good seat too. I decide to give up on the solid top curve and routed the edges of each individual lid board so they matched up regardless of sanding (sanding down square non-coplaner edges would have revealed gaps anyway, this way I have a 1/4 inch to go before a gap starts).
**UPDATE: January 14, 2009 Handles Arived! And I think I'm going with English Chestnut. still tossing gloss/semi-gloss/satin choice around.
**UPDATE: April 30, 2009 Between projects I've started and finished the Tray Insert which rests just inside the trunk. Swivel shelf is still up in the air as to whether or not it will be. Next up is to seal and plug any interior seams, stain and finish.
**UPDATE: May 16, 2009 Finally got around to filling the major cracks. Tomarrow I'm looking to start the staining ^_^

Rember, keeping a clean workshop is the surest way to prevent accidents like those depicted in the "Saw" movies from happening.
